Born Ashot (Achod) Malakian in Turkey in 1920, Henri Verneuil was an acclaimed French film director. He was nominated for a Palme d’Or at Cannes as well as an Academy Award. He was awarded the latter’s equivalent in France, a Cesar, for his life’s works.

Ivan Aivazovsky was born in Crimea in 1817 and became one of the great artists of the 19th century and the most renowned artist of seascapes in history. His deft use of the paintbrush was recognized early in his life and he painted tirelessly, producing around 6,000 paintings.

Rockefeller and the Nobel brothers, his juggernaut contemporaries, in Baku, the city where he helped to develop the oil industry.
